Cala d'Or, guide to the Majorca seaside resort of Cala d'Or and information on the area.
Guide to Cala D'Or Majorca
Formerly just a small fishing village on the east coast of Majorca, Cala D’Or arrived early to the island’s tourism boom, when a holiday complex was erected (in the Ibiza style) during the 1930’s. Most of its fishing village charm has now gone, though this is still a pretty place, with life centred around its modern marina, where luxury yachts have largely replaced the traditional fishing vessels, and well-heeled visitors pack the waterside bars and restaurants.
The Cala D’Or resort has now spread somewhat, and takes in a number of delightful little bays and coves, with around 4 kilometres of coastline in all. These small beaches (the largest being Cala Gran), can get pretty hectic during the high season, so if you are looking for a bit of beach space, you might need to head down the coast a bit, in order to find somewhere a little less crowded.
An excellent choice of resort if you are into water sports, you will find plenty of facilities for sailing, scuba diving and windsurfing in the harbour area. Land lubbers may prefer to head for the Club Vall D’Or golf course, for some on land exercise, tennis fans will also find some decent facilities. Back to the marina, you will find a number of boat trips on offer, a good start is to take the pleasant journey by water to Cala Figuera.
Among the events that you can see in Cala D’or is the International Jazz Festival, held in may and June each year.
Accommodation in Cala D’Or is fairly easy to find and there are a decent variety of hotels to choose from, as well as a huge choice of privately owned self-catering apartments and villas. The first choice for a holiday in Cala D’Or would surely be to rent a detached villa with its own swimming pool, and there are plenty on offer within walking distance of the marina and resort centre.
